Mayme Jurkat

d. November 21, 2014

Passed away on Friday, November 21, 2014 at her Santa Fe home. She was born June 27, 1934 in Mountain Home, Arkansas. She is survived by her husband, Peter Jurkat; two daughters, Susanna Jurkat and Maria Jackson and husband Peter; one son, Alex Jurkat and wife Elizabeth Morss. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Nicholas Jurkat and Toreh Jackeson, and her two brothers, William Dreaden and James Dreaden. We remember Mayme as strong, vibrant, kind, understanding, and quietly persistent -- a spirit to be reckoned with. Born into poverty, Mayme truly made the best of a bad situation. Despite being surrounded by a culture hostile to educated women, she became the first of her extended family to finish grade school, high school, college, and even a graduate degree. While raising three children and supporting her beloved husband in his career, Mayme was active professionally in urban rehabilitation for nearly 30 years. She also enjoyed gardening and did her best to leave no book unread. When Mayme set her mind to achieve a goal, she let little get in her way. In doing so, however, she did her best to show generosity, respect, care, and humor to all that came her way. A graveside ceremony will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 26, 2014 at Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Santa Fe. Her family requests in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to her favorite cause, The Food Depot, 1222 A Siler Rd, Santa Fe, NM 87507.
