Mercedes “Mercy” Martinez of Chamita NM, went to be with our Lord on Wednesday March 23, 2022, surrounded by her loving family.
Our Tia Mercy was 96 years old when she passed. She was preceded in death by her parents, Antonio and Manuelita Martinez; sisters, Sophia Martinez (Max), Isabelle Guillen (Vicente), Maria Maes (Manuel), Odila Montoya (Benny), Teresita Salazar (Ruben); brothers, Elisaido Martinez (Ramona), Juan Esteban Martinez (Estella), Antonio Martinez Jr. (Fortie), Jose Ramon Martinez (Francis) and several nephews and nieces. She is survived by a deeply cherished neice and nephew Katherine Maestas, and Angelo Maestas, and beloved nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and numerous God children.
Mercy was born in San Juan Pueblo, NM. She attended San Juan Parochial School in her youth and graduated as Valedictorian of Santa Cruz High School. She retired from Los Alamos National Laboratory and cared for her parents until their deaths.
Mercy was an extremely integral part of the lives of her nieces and nephews, as she was very involved in their upbringing. Additionally, she was very devoted to Our Lord Jesus and Our blessed Mother Mary. Every May and October for several years, she cleaned the Lourdes shrine in San Juan Pueblo, and led the rosary each day. Her passion was music, she had the voice of an angel and an extraordinary memory for lyric. Her eclectic taste in music ranged from religious hymns to Elvis and the Beatles. Her repertoire consisted of hundreds of songs, which she knew verbatim.
Everyone who was blessed to know our aunt was moved by her sincerity, humor, and sweetness, and were probably treated to her famous biscochitos. She also had quite the flair for fashion and was always stylishly attired.
The family would like to thank everyone for their calls, prayers, food, flowers, visits, and help with her care, especially Father Clarence Maez (her nephew), Father Dennis, Father Jose, and Father Nathan for anointing her. Thank you also to Ambercare for the compassionate care they provided. Thank you to David Salazar who brought her Holy Communion every Sunday for years. Also to Maria Boggs for the massage therapy that she provided for our aunt in her last months.
Services will be on Friday, April 22, 2022 with the Rosary at 1:00 PM and Mass at 2:00 PM at The San Juan Bautista , 185 Popay, Ohkay Owingeh, NM 87566. Burial to follow at Alcalde Cemetery.
