Michael D. Maremont died at age 87 on May 2, 2021 after a brief illness. A long-time Santa Fe resident and transplant from Chicago, he worked in commercial real estate in both cities.
Passionate about teaching and mentoring, Michael taught entrepreneurship at Northwestern University’s adult-education college. He coached small-business owners at SCORE where he served as Santa Fe chair, founded the New Mexico Zia chapter of real estate society Lambda Alpha International and served on the City of Santa Fe’s Long-Term Planning committee. Michael’s community involvement was matched by a history of charitable giving through a family foundation, with a focus on low-income housing and the arts.
Born in St. Louis, Michael graduated from the University of Missouri and served as a 1st Lieutenant and in the U.S. Army. Michael later moved to the Windy City where he founded M.D. Maremont Company, a commercial real estate firm. In Santa Fe, he established his own firm and was affiliated with several local brokerages. He enjoyed hiking and exploring Northern NM. An avid tennis player, he continued to play into his 80s. Known for his intellect and dry humor, Michael was learning and making new friends until his death. He will be dearly missed by many.
Michael is survived by his children Mark (Emily Dreifus) of Boston; Stephen of Portland, OR; and Kate (Paul) Stone of Chicago; stepson Rob (Pam) Austin of Chicago; six grandchildren and a great grandchild; three sisters and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his wife Nancie Dodge Maremont and his dear companion Susan Harrison Kelly.
A private family service will be held at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
