Michael Uremovich

April 23, 1943 — January 20, 2023

Michael Elliott Uremovich died of cancer on January 20, 2023 in Santa Fe, NM, after an interesting and adventurous life well lived.

Born on April 23, 1943 in Philadelphia, the eldest of six children, Michael spent his youth in CA and AZ before leaving high school to join the navy at age 17.  Upon discharge, he returned and graduated from The University of Arizona.  He went on to receive two additional graduate degrees.

Michael retired as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of Pacer International after holding senior positions at the Southern Pacific Railroad and American President Lines.  He also had a successful consulting career – as a Principal with Booz, Allen and Hamilton and then as a Partner with Manalytics International.  Michael eventually returned to his beloved southwest, retiring in Santa Fe.

Throughout his life, Michael was a curious learner with a wide range of interests. He loved the opportunities he got to sail, fish and hunt in wide geographies.  He was a model ship builder, trap shooter, opera enthusiast, a voracious reader, and he travelled extensively for business and pleasure, having visited over sixty countries.  He was a volunteer EMT, a mentor with the Big Brothers program, Chair of the Board of Governors at St. John’s College, and he volunteered much time to various philanthropic organizations.

Michael is survived by his adoring wife, Susan, siblings Stephanie Thomson (Tom), Tina Holmes, Karla Robinson, Nicole Masters (James), and Joseph Uremovich, stepson Aaron Scholl and daughter-in-law Carissa Scholl, grandsons Davin and Mason, sister-in-law Rebecca Hoye (Tom), former spouse Carrea Uremovich, cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.

Michael was an incredible, quick-witted, wonderful man, strong and courageous to the end.  He was so dearly loved and will be deeply missed, even as he lives on forever in our hearts.

A private celebration of Michael’s life will be held in the spring.  Donations in Michael’s memory would be welcomed by Santa Fe Animal Shelter and Humane Society, 100 Caja Del Rio Road, 87507.
