Miles J.O. Gullingsrud Jr.
Miles Gullingsrud passed away after a long illness on Sunday, October 9, 2022 at the age of 81. He went peacefully in his home in Eldorado. Miles had lived in many states in the U.S.: New York, New Jersey, Minnesota, North Carolina, California and finally New Mexico. Santa Fe was his choice for a retirement home.
After serving in the Marine Corps in Viet Nam as a radio operator, he returned to finish his college education and began working as a newspaper reporter in Riverside and Palm Springs, CA. He enjoyed journalism and public relations jobs, but eventually found his true calling in the education field. Miles became a middle school English language arts teacher in Coachella and Thermal, CA. After retiring to Santa Fe, he continued as a volunteer reading tutor for students in Cesar Chavez Community School for several years.
Over the years, golf became his hobby and true passion. He reported on golf tournaments with Reuters, watched golf on television and in person, and played golf every chance he had.
Throughout his life, Miles found ways to enjoy music. He sang in a group in college and sang in the church choir at St. Margaret’s in Palm Desert, CA and at St. Bede’s in Santa Fe, NM. He enjoyed classical music and was excited about living in Santa Fe and attending operas and other musical events.
Miles is survived by his wife Sylvia, daughter Amanda, son Miles, three grandchildren: Matthew, Michael and Violet, and a half brother Anthony Grace.
Services will be held at St. Bede’s Episcopal Church on Monday, November 14, 2022 at 10 a.m. After a luncheon reception, all are invited to attend the burial at the National Cemetery at 1:30pm
