Onesima Montoya passed away on Monday April 12, 2010 in Santa Fe at the age of 94. She was born in Mangas, NM on November 22, 1915.
Onesima is preceded in death by her parents, Crecencio and Sofia Padilla; husband Shorty Cash; two sons, Robert and Jimmy Montoya; granddaughter; Carla Gallegos; and 9 siblings.
She is survived by two sons, Frank Montoya (Melanie) and Marcial (Elissa)Montoya; two daughters, Sophia Gallegos (Carlos) and Barbara Montoya (Joe); 12 grandchildren; 20 great granddaughter; and 3 great, great grandchildren; one sister, Marian Temer; and several nieces and nephews.
As a young girl Onesima preferred the outdoors-chopping wood, hauling water, tending livestock, riding horseback and picking pinon.
Onesima attended school in Quemado, NM. She married in Albuquerque and worked as a weaver. In California she worked as a riveter during the war. She trained as a cosmetologist and held various other positions.
An expression of gratitude goes out to the emergency personnel and the ambulance drivers from Alta Vista Hospital in Las Vegas, and Presbyterian Hospice Program of Santa Fe for their loving care and support.
A celebration of Onesima's life will be held in Quemado, NM, at a date to be determined.
