Patrick Chavez

April 3, 1952 — July 27, 2024

Patrick P. Chavez (4/3/52-7/27/24) Patrick P. Chavez was set free on July 27, 2024 when he passed away at his Santa Fe home. Patrick was known by his friends and family as a kind, generous and loving soul. He spent his career as a special education teacher, case worker, and administrator at the Los Lunes Hospital and Training School. He was a graduate of Belen High School and earned his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Albuquerque (Formerly St. Joseph’s), and a Master's Degree in Special Education from the University of New Mexico. Patrick’s giving spirit and joy for life continued in his years after retirement where he could be found hunting for antiques and other treasures, visiting churches and shrines wherever he traveled and following his partner Robert to various car shows, often abandoning the car show in favor of shopping. Throughout his life, Patrick resided in both Santa Fe and Albuquerque, where he made lasting memories and connections. Patrick's compassionate and generous soul shined throughout his life, his many years spent working in special education leaving an indelible mark on countless students and colleagues. He had a special place in his heart for the homeless, and those with special needs. He would often buy food for those he saw struggling on the streets, and would sometimes befriend them, making sure they were taken care of when the weather got too cold or hot. His kindness inspired and empowered people all over the world, whether they knew him for decades, or only met him briefly. Patrick had a deep love for his family and was a cherished brother, uncle, and cousin. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Clorinda (Cordi) Chavez, and his brother-in-law Robert McGregor. Patrick is survived by his loving sisters, Geri McGregor and Annette Sanchez, and brother-in-law Michael. He is also survived by his cherished nephews, Chris Sanchez and his wife Justeen, along with their son Hunter, and Jeff Sanchez and his wife Erin, along with their daughter Nora, who were among his greatest joys in life. Patrick is also survived by his devoted partner of 44 years, Robert Ortega, and Robert’s brothers, sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews. He is also survived by numerous cousins and countless friends. Patrick’s sense of humor, kindness, and generosity will be profoundly missed by friends and family across the globe. There will be a mass for immediate family on August 9th, and a celebration of life in early fall.
