Rebekah Azen Passed away October 20, 2011, in Tesuque, N.M. Born September 14, 1958, in Madison, Wisconsin, she was 53 years old. Rebekah is survived by her parents Edwin and Amy Azen, her sisters Ruth Jasso and Rachel Dimakis, and her brother David Azen. Her extended family includes Cathy and Ray Aguilar and many friends at San Felipe Pueblo who loved her dearly and felt truly honored to have her in their lives. Rebekah received her master's degree in library and information science from Louisiana State University in 1990 and began her career working in tribal libraries. Her love of the Southwest and Native American culture brought her to New Mexico 27 years ago, and finally to Tesuque. Rebekah founded and chaired Millennial Light Library, whose purpose is to address the dearth of resources available to the public through mainstream libraries regarding issues of pressing social and ecological concerns, especially in the areas of sustainability and social transformation. She was a proponent of natural healing and homeopathic medicine and was involved with progressive causes throughout her life, with the hope of contributing to societal wellbeing. She was a writer for the Green Fire Times. She was a great lover of the outdoors and spent much of her free time hiking with her dog, Napoleon, near her Tesuque home. Just as important in her life were her dogs Lassie and Wah-bush, who are no longer with us. Rebekah was, most recently, an employee of the Santa Fe New Mexican newspaper, working as both a consultant and a librarian for 15 years. She will be dearly missed by those who knew her.
All were invited to a graveside service in honor of Rebekah on October 30, 2011. A visitation with family followed at a location announced at the service. The ceremony was held at the Rivera Family of Santa Fe Funeral Options, 417 East Rodeo Road, Santa Fe, New Mexico.
