Refugio Chavez, age 96, of Santa Fe, New Mexico passed away December 30, 2016. He was born September 3, 1920 in Lamy, New Mexico to Joaquin and Benigna Chavez. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife Senaida Chavez, his parents, brothers and sisters. He is survived by daughters: Mercy Salazar (Larry), Mary Alice Salazar (Ernie), Christine Mora (Robert); sons: Peter Chavez (Isabel), Ray Chavez (Geraldine); and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Refugio served in the United States Army from 1940 to 1945 and was a Prisoner of War (POW) for 18 months in Germany. He is a lifelong member of the VFW and DAV. He was a construction worker, mechanic at a bowling alley and a custodian for Santa Fe Public Schools. He had many traits and utilized them all to support his family. He retired at age 62.
All of Refugio’s family and friends can take comfort in knowing that he has once again joined with his wife, the love of his life, and had looked forward to this day since her passing.
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 6, 2017 at 12:30pm to 1:00pm at Santa Maria De La Paz Catholic Community. A rosary will be resided at 1:00pm at Santa Maria De La Paz Catholic Community with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated to follow at 2:00pm. The burial services will be held at 3:00pm Monday, January 9, 2017 at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Joseph Barela, Christopher Barela, Joaquin Barela, Benny Mora, James Mora, Adam Mora, Ray Chavez Jr and Issac Chavez.
