Robert South

d. October 30, 2015

Robert (Bob) F. South passed away Friday, October 30, 2015, at Holy Cross Hospital in Taos, New Mexico, after a long illness with many complications. Bob was born in Ft. Worth, Texas. The son of Flora and Berney South, he graduated from Handley High School outside of Ft. Worth, after which he served four years in the US Navy. After his military service, he attended Texas Tech University in Lubbock on the GI Bill, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering in three years. He was an astute businessman who accomplished whatever he set his mind to. As the owner of the Gas Equipment Testing Company, he put his degree to use in the design of an improved engine analyzer for the natural gas industry. In the mid-1980s, he sold the company and purchased an old warehouse in Goliad, Texas, which he and his wife renovated into a home. At the same time, they were refurbishing an adobe home in the Taos Historic District, with plans to divide their time between Goliad and Taos, where they had vacationed for years. Eventually, however, they made the decision to sell the property in Goliad and live full-time in Taos. With a deep love of the land, Bob purchased acreage in Tres Piedras, where he and his family and friends spent many hours hiking and picnicking. His favorite hike was the Italianos Canyon Trail in Taos Ski Valley. He especially enjoyed hiking with his beloved dog, Arizona. He also loved the history and multicultural fabric of life in Taos. He was a lifelong Democrat who believed in social justice and equality. A man of great humor, compassion, and generosity, Bob South was calm, kind, welcoming, and resourceful. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Helen P. South; his sons, Robert David South of New York and Benjamin B. South of Dallas; and his sister, Mary Ann Harris. He was preceded in death by his brother, Carl, and their parents. The family thanks Dr. John Foster and the nursing staff at Holy Cross Hospital and the staff of Rivera-Hanlon Funeral Home. Special thanks to Dr. Larry Schreiber for his years of care, concern, and understanding. A private memorial service was held on November 8, 2015. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Shared Table or Stray Hearts Animal Shelter. Arrangements by Rivera Family Funeral Home.
