                     “A Pride”

         A pride of splay-toes wizzles

         Marched noisily down the path.

         They scared the farmer so,

He nearly tripped upon his snath!

Now, if I were that farmer-man,

(And, of course, if he were me)

Why, I’d hang my scythe upon a handy branch

         And suddenly-I’d flee!!

(poem by Roger M. Clough, Owl’s Head, Maine 1984)
