In Loving Memory: Rosemarie “Mimi” Lonergan (née Thalheimer)

Rosemarie “Mimi” Lonergan, a remarkable woman whose life journey spanned continents, cultures, and countless cherished memories, peacefully departed this world in Santa Fe on May 19, 2024, after a courageous battle with illness. Born during the war in Ellwangen, Germany, she carried her indomitable spirit across oceans, eventually finding her heart’s true home amidst the enchanting landscapes of New Mexico in 1975.

Mimi’s life was a vibrant tapestry woven with threads of love, adventure, and laughter. Whether savoring croissants in Parisian cafés or hiking the red rock canyons of New Mexico, her zest for life was contagious. For 36 beautiful years, she shared an enduring love story with her devoted husband, John Lonergan. Together, they explored the world, leaving footprints in diverse places—from the bustling streets of Japan to the sun-kissed beaches of Bali and the timeless beauty of Italy.

Survived by her niece, Trixi Mecky, in Cologne, and her nephew, Steffen Hezinger, of Stuttgart, Germany, Mimi’s impact reached across continents. Steffen, particularly close to Mimi, visited her in New Mexico over several decades. Her best friend of 49 years, Cheryl Sowder, resides in the Jemez mountains with her husband, Joe Brophy. To Cheryl and Joe’s son, Ryan Brophy, Mimi was more than a friend—she was a second mother. Ryan, now with his own family in Austin, Texas, carries Mimi’s legacy forward.

During her health challenges, Mimi found unwavering support from Lucy Vigil of Santa Fe. Together, they traveled across Europe—to France, Italy, Germany, and Israel—creating a lifetime of shared experiences.

Mimi’s sharp wit and quick humor endeared her to a vast network of friends and family. From lively gatherings in Santa Fe to heartfelt reunions in Europe, her presence lit up every room. She effortlessly bridged cultures, languages, and generations, leaving an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to know her.

Her legacy extends beyond borders. Her granddaughter, Jade Behnke, of McMinnville, Oregon, embodies Mimi’s spirit of curiosity, resilience, and love for life.

As we mourn her passing, let us celebrate the vibrant tapestry of memories Mimi wove. In this time of grief, may we remember her as a beacon of laughter, a seeker of beauty, and a cherished soul who danced through life with grace. May her memory inspire us all to embrace adventure, cherish loved ones, and savor every moment.

Rest in peace, dear Mimi. Your laughter echoes in our hearts, and your spirit dances among the stars.
