J. Salomon Salazar, 87, passed away peacefully on January 22, 2014. Salomon, a lifelong resident of El Guache, New Mexico, is survived by Flora Martinez de Salazar, his wife of sixty-three years, children Teresa Kerstiens (husband Lyle) of Santa Fe, Deacon Miguel Salazar (wife Rosalie) of El Guache, Gloria Shuttles (husband Bob) of La Mesilla, Jose Salazar of Albuquerque and close grand-daughter Erica Manzanares (husband Gregory) of Alcalde; grandchildren, Jennifer Garcia, Eron Kerstiens (wife Teri), Isaac Salazar (wife Nadia), Olivia Caraveo (husband Victor), Jessica Quintana (husband Ramon), Amanda Rose Salazar, Justin Salazar, Charles Shuttles (wife Karrie), Robby Shuttles (wife Heather) and Bill Shuttles (wife Stephanie); great grandchildren, Athena Manzanares, Ashlyn Garcia, Michael Pio Caraveo, Gianna Caraveo, Joseph Caraveo, Peter Salazar, Sarah Salazar, Ana Salazar and Lucia Quintana. He is also survived by sisters, Sadie Salazar (husband Pat), Bessie Vigil (husband John), Emily Maestas (husband Pete) and Laura Prando (husband Floyd) brother-in-law Celestino Gonzales and sister-in-law Annette Martinez; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other close relatives. Salomon was preceded in death by grandchildren Jonathan Garcia and Erica Kerstiens, parents Jose Miguel Salazar and Teodorita Montoya de Salazar, sisters: Virginia Gonzales; Angelina Garcia and husband, Manuel; Cleo Lopez and husband, Margarito; father and mother in-law David and Matilde Martinez; sister in-law Margaret Nelson and husband Emory and brother in-law Gilberto Martinez.
Salomon worked for the Zia Co. and Pan Am Co. in Los Alamos, New Mexico for twenty-seven years; prior to that he worked for Bond & Willard, Standard Oil Co. and the Farmway Feed store in Espanola. Upon retirement he drove a school bus for Garcia Transportation for several years. He most enjoyed ranching, buying and selling ranch equipment and livestock, reading westerns and visiting with his extensive family, friends and neighbors. Salomon had a wealth of knowledge of family history and genealogy and enjoyed sharing the family connections with others.
A rosary was recited on Sunday, January 26, 2014 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Espanola, New Mexico. Funeral mass was held on Monday, January 27, 2014 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Espanola. Burial followed at the same location. Serving as pallbearers will be Gregory Manzanares, Robert Shuttles, Lyle Kerstiens, Isaac Salazar, Justin Salazar, Ramon Quintana, Victor Caraveo, and Jacobo Salazar.
