Steve (Gregory) Conley

March 31, 1953 — February 12, 2025

Steve Conley, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on February 12, 2025, at the age of 71. Born on March 31, 1953, in Rock Rapids, Iowa, Steve moved with his family to Los Alamos, New Mexico when he was a young child. He was a proud graduate of Los Alamos High School, class of 1971. Steve married his best friend, Lynn, in 1999, and together they shared many adventures, creating a lifetime of memories.

Steve’s life was one of adventure, passion, and devotion to his family. An avid skier, he spent countless winter weekends at Pajarito Ski Hill, sharing the slopes with his kids and friends. In the summer months, Steve could be found at the ball fields, either cheering on his children or playing in the men’s softball league, where his competitive spirit and love for the game shone through.

He was also a motorcycle enthusiast, from a young age exploring the trails around Los Alamos, to later in life, finding joy in the open road canyons and the freedom it brought. Above all, Steve’s unwavering dedication to supporting his wife Lynn, and two children, Michelle and Christopher, was likely his greatest accomplishment in life. He was always present at their sporting events, encouraged them in all their pursuits and included them in all his adventures.

For many years, Steve worked as a mechanic at the Chevron station, building a reputation for his skill and work ethic. After the Chevron station closed, he continued his craft at Knecht’s Automotive, where he became known for his reliability and dedication to his trade. Poised to fix others' problems often meant he had to let many of his own rest on the backburner, but for him if his wife, children, and customers were taken care of he was content.

Steve was a selfless man who never met a stranger. His generosity extended far beyond his family. He shared his knowledge with anyone who sought it, always willing to lend a helping hand or offer advice. His kindness, warmth, and ability to connect with others left an indelible mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lynn Conley, his four-legged child Hailee, his children Michelle Kitchens (Eric) and Christopher Conley (Amy), and his cherished grandchildren Gabby Conley-Lopez, Zachary Sturgeon, Holly Conley, Natalie Conley, Carly Conley, and his brother Jay Schmahl. Steve will be remembered for his unwavering love, his generosity, and his genuine heart. He is preceded in death by his brother, Mike Conley, mother Marge Schmahl, father Frank Schmal as well as many loved aunts and uncles.

A celebration of Steve's life will be held in Los Alamos, where his legacy will live on in the memories of those who knew him and loved him. Details to come. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
