August 6, 1950 — April 21, 2017

Mrs. Susan Moeri Hassig, 66, of Santa Fe, New Mexico passed away on Friday, April 21st 2017 while in residency at Vista Hermosa Living Community. Mrs. Hassig succumbed to complications from Alzheimer’s Disease and passed away under the care of dedicated health professionals. Her husband, Ross Hassig, was a mainstay during Susan’s final years of life and visited her daily throughout her battle with Alzheimer’s. Mrs. Hassig is survived by her husband; Ross Hassig, also of Santa Fe, New Mexico, her two brothers; David Moeri with wife MaryAnn, and Ken Moeri with wife Mary; of New Hampshire and New Jersey respectively. Her eldest son; Robert (Rob) Lee of Fort Worth, Texas, and her youngest son; Jonathan Lee and his wife Natalie Ledbetter of Brooklyn, New York. She is also survived by two grandchildren from Robert; Caroline and Isabel Lee, also of Fort Worth, Texas. Susan was preceded in death by her father, John Moeri and her mother Dorothy Moeri of Sarasota, Florida. Mrs. Hassig was born in 1950, and was raised in Mendham , New Jersey. She graduated from West Morris High School in 1968 and from Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania in 1972 with a degree in Secondary Education History with a minor in speech therapy. She received an additional Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education from William Paterson State College in New Jersey. She received her Master’s in History in 1997 and a Masters in Library Science in 2001 from the University of Oklahoma. Mrs. Hassig began her career as a preschool teacher in Stanhope, New Jersey in the late 1970’s and continued when her family moved to Norman, Oklahoma in 1984. During her 16 years in Norman, Susan had a career as a preschool teacher, library technician, and librarian. She moved to Chicago, Illinois in 2000 and worked as a Children’s Librarian for the Chicago Public Library system until 2002. Susan continued her career as a librarian with the Central Arizona College of Casa Grande, Arizona while living in Tucson, Arizona before relocating to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 2011. Susan was a loving Mother, Grandmother, caregiver, and teacher. Placing education and learning above all other things. This love of knowledge was the link through her varied career paths. No matter the age or subject the process of learning, reading, and exploring new avenues of knowledge gave her joy throughout her life. A child’s discovery of reading was of particular delight to Susan and she would often travel to visit her grandchildren with more books than clothes. Susan was also a talented artist, enthusiastic traveler, avid appreciator of the Arts & Crafts, collector of glass art, and a lover of historic urban architecture in the U.S. and abroad. Her battle with Alzheimer’s disease began to take its toll in 2012. As this form is particularly aggressive the effects were swift and dramatic, bringing her to the need for care in 2013 until her ultimate passing. In lieu of flowers the family asks donations be made in her remembrance to your local chapter of The Alzheimer's Association who work diligently to provide research and support to those who have been touched by this disease as well as providing support for their families.
