Suzan Grace Chaffee Hall, of Santa Fe, New Mexico, passed away on December 17, 2018, having recently celebrated her 80th birthday. She was born on October 24, 1938 in Garnett, Kansas to the late Margaret Harris Chaffee and the late Dr. Dean Cyrus Chaffee, MD. She grew up in Abilene, Kansas, until she left for the east coast to attend college in Pennsylvania.
Suzan graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1960 and continued to travel, living in New York City, Honolulu, Hawaii, Los Angeles, California, Rowayton, Connecticut, and Portland, Oregon. She and Charles B. Hall met in Honolulu in 1961 where he was serving as a Naval Officer. They enjoyed 32 years of marriage, and together they raised three children.
She called Santa Fe, New Mexico home for the past 16 years, where she lived nextdoor to her son and daughter-in-law and two of her grandchildren. She was an artist, writer and educator, and a beloved mother and grandmother. She was passionate about learning, was an avid reader and loved good conversation. She was also an accomplished piano player. She loved hiking and sitting to draw with family and friends in nature. She enjoyed painting, drawing, printing, ceramics, writing, reading and gardening.
Suzan is survived by her children, Charles Frederick Hall, Elizabeth Hall Thauer and Jason Dean Hall, and her grandchildren, Cobin Dean Hall, Haven Riley Hall, Kristen Chaffee Thauer, and Jenna Beck Thauer. She also leaves behind her adored cat, Tuffy, who found her last summer and was there to see her through this challenging year. Suzan was an incredibly strong and beautiful woman, described as elegant by many friends.
