Sylvia E. Martínez, 72, died at her home, surrounded by loved ones, on January 6, 2011. Born in Las Vegas, New Mexico on February 5, 1938 Sylvia attended Las Vegas High School from which she graduated in 1956. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Education from New Mexico Highlands University where she met Rudolfo Rudy Martínez. She and Rudy married at Spanish Presbyterian Church in Las Vegas in 1960 and soon moved to Rudys hometown of Española where Sylvia worked as an educator at Sombrillo Elementary School. They had two children, Luanne E. Martínez and Marc E. Martínez. Sylvia was a world traveler, a dedicated member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, and an avid bowler with a personal best of 235. She was preceded in death by husband, Rudolfo Rudy Martinez; mother, Alice Madrid; father Carlos S. Madrid; and sister Carla M. Madrid. She is survived by daughter, Luanne E. Martínez; son, Marc E. Martínez; grandson, Joshua M. Schaeffer; seester, Paula Yolanda Madrid Windham; and many other beloved family and friends. A Memorial service will be held at Rivera Family Funeral Home in Española on Monday January 10th at 6 PM. Interment will be held at 10:30 am on Tuesday, January 11 at The Santa Fe National Cemetery, after which a celebration of life will be held at the Fraternal Order of Eagles, 18996 U.S. Highway 285, Española.
