Tomas Miguel (Mike) Benedicto Jaramillo
December 21, 1935 – May 23, 2018
HE WAS A BIG MAN WITH A BIG HEART! A heart that gave out on him after ALL and EVERYTHING that he gave to his family and community.
Mike Jaramillo was born in Santa Fe, NM on December 21, 1935. For the first eighteen years of his life he grew-up in El Rito, NM. Mike always liked to boast that he grew-up riding horses living in God’s country. Mike was 3 yrs. old when he first rode a horse. He and his siblings helped their mother and father run a ranch and lived during the time of the end of the great pastoral age. A direct descendent of the earliest Spanish settlers in New Mexico, Mike was the last of the Jaramillo family to pass, thus ending an era of strong, enduring people that lived off the land.
Mike was born to and preceded in death by his mother Elvira, his father Roman; his brothers Roman, Isaac, Chris, Rudy, (two infant brothers named Teddy, respectively), Carlos, and Ted; sister Consuelo; he is survived by his beloved wife and life partner Debbie Jaramillo; son Angelo; stepsons Michael and Carlos; grandchildren Gabrielle and Asher; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Mike lived a raucous, boisterous, hard-working, and unique life consisting of two different worlds: the old world and the modern world. After working the ranch in El Rito and graduating from the Normal School in El Rito in 1954, Mike moved to Santa Fe, served in the Army from 1960 – 1962 stationed in Hanau, Germany; worked for the City of Santa Fe as a City Planner for 15 years throughout the 1960s and 1970s; met and married Debbie Jaramillo where they would eventually form a formidable political duo throughout the 1980s and 1990s winning numerous victories as community activists and eventually winning political campaigns where Debbie would serve as City Councilor and eventually first and only woman Mayor of the City of Santa Fe which also entitled and made Mike the “First Man” of the City of Santa Fe. He was very proud of that title as he should have been. After all it was because of Mike that Debbie herself was able to achieve her political place in life.
Mike continued in public service and retired as an Aviation Planner for the State of New Mexico. In addition to a lifelong love of horses, Mike also loved and enjoyed woodworking and weaving (which he learned from his father, a famous Chimayo weaver), visiting the mountains, home improvement projects, listening to Javier Solis, his wine and weed, and enjoying every breathing second he could muster as a vibrant living human being on this planet. Mike will be missed tremendously, and honored through those that loved him most. We will love you forever, Rest in Peace and as he always said, “HASTA LA VICTORIA SIEMPRE”!
A mass will be held Thursday, June 7th, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church off W. Alameda in Santa Fe, NM; followed by a burial at the National Cemetery at 11:15 a.m.
