Thomas Brent Schawel passed away peacefully on June 23, 2023 at his home in Santa Fe, NM. Tommy was a bright and energetic spirit who faced life head on with an uncannily ability to make everyone feel special and appreciated. His affable personality always made people laugh at just the right time. Most importantly, he loved and cared deeply for his family and friends. An avid sports fan, Tommy passionately relished sporting events, especially his beloved Chicago Cubs. Tommy earned a Bachelor of Arts double majoring in Political Science and Economics from the University of New Mexico in 2006. He was a proud member of the Sigma Epsilon fraternity. He worked as a senior policy writer for the New Mexico Department of Higher Education where he used his gift of erudition to craft meaningful education policies that will benefit many future New Mexicans for generations to come. Tommy is survived by his mother, Susan, of Albuquerque, NM; his father Glen, step-mother Christina and their son Caleb of Santa Fe, NM; his sister Wendy and husband Sydney Blocher, of Prosper, TX; and his sister Amy and husband David Hill of San Marcos, CA. He is also survived by an extended and loving family of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins, all who deeply loved and cared for him. He will be truly missed. A celebration of Tommy’s life is planned for later this year and details will be made available when ready. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Tommy’s name to Cubs Scholars, a Cubs Charities Program.
