Vivienne Baum was born on September 5, 1915 to Henrietta Colin and David Goldberg in New York City, NY. She discovered her calling to teach early childhood while taking graduate courses at Bank Street College in lower Manhattan. Vivienne married Joseph Baum on December 13, 1939, and they were married for 57 years. Vivienne and Joe arrived in Taos (their Shangri-La) on June 22, 1947. Vivienne ran her own preschool and kindergarten near their home on Carabajal for 15 years, then became Director of the Head Start Program for three years. She taught first grade from 1970 to 1978. Upon retirement from her teaching career she devoted her time to volunteer at the Taos Public Library processing books, as well as being a tutor for the Childrens Reading Program. The couple also enjoyed playing chamber music with many local musicians and at concerts held at the Harwood Foundation.
Vivienne is preceded in death by her late husband Joseph. She is survived by her half brother, Dr. Marvin Reisman and many close and dear friends.
She will be missed by those who loved her. Her brother writes She left her roots to find a home. Although apart, we were united in spirit.
A memorial for Vivienne will be held on September 7, 2013 at 4 PM at the Village Bistro located on the Taos Retirement Village grounds followed by a pot luck of finger foods.
